5 Design Trends That Will Define the Interiors of 2023

Updated: Jan 21, 2023

Designing homes for over 20 years has given me the ability to spot trends that are clearly going through the popularity rotation. Just as fashion goes through its cycles, so do interior design concepts. Though I don’t generally incorporate fads into my projects, I still enjoy observing them and how people incorporate them into their spaces.

I’ve designed through multiple micro-trends and macro-trends, but these are five that will define the interiors of 2023.

Soft Pink Palletes

Mauve and similar colors are seen in a plethora of spaces right now, adding a feminine touch to rooms without much effort. Accented pieces and artwork are a wonderful way to introduce this delicate color into your home. If you want to be bold, you can find soft pink upholstered pieces such as chairs and sofas.

Geometric Patterns

Sharp, angular patterns are making their way into homes and it’s such an easy element to incorporate. Geometric patterns on throw blankets, pillows, or even wall art are the perfect way to introduce bolder and more intricate patterns to any space. If you want to level it up, add geometric art pieces and distinct vases to coffee tables and countertops!

Clean but Contrasting Kitchens

Clutter-free kitchens are on the rise, and hidden storage is the answer. Especially in spaces like kitchens and living rooms where furniture can be multi-functional, you can use hidden cabinets and drawers to keep countertops neat and prevent your space from getting untidy. An orderly kitchen should not stop you from mixing different types of wood though. I’m seeing an influx of designers and homeowners using different finishes throughout their homes and even adding beautiful gold plumbing fixtures for more contrast.

Suave Wallpaper

Wallpaper isn’t the same as it was a few decades ago. Many people think of their grandmother’s yellow-stained, floral paper but options are much more tasteful now. The easy installation and variety of patterns make it the perfect addition to powder rooms. As opposed to the living room or other gathering areas in your home, the powder room can be really bold, especially with wallcovering and light fixtures. For an even bolder use, you can add mural wallpaper to children’s rooms and media rooms as a true statement piece.

Customized Furniture

A truly captivating trend that I love to participate in is customized furniture. Here on the Big Island, we have skilled artisans who make the most beautiful handcrafted pieces using local supplies. From coffee tables to bed frames, you can bring your dream furniture home to life by creating pieces that are perfectly aligned with your vision. What is so wonderful about customized furniture is the sentimentality that it will forever hold – pass it down to your children as a special family heirloom.

Whether you decide to follow every trend or pick just one, I hope you are molding your space into the sanctuary you’ve always wanted it to be. If you’re having trouble narrowing down your vision or need someone to take the reins, book a consultation with Diane Bobek Design to give your home its 2023 makeover.
