Color, Texture, and Pattern: A Roundup of Our Favorite Wallpapers

In my twenty years of design experience, I have watched wallpaper trends ebb and flow. As we approach 2025, wallpaper is receiving its well-deserved time in the spotlight, and I only predict that it will continue to grow in popularity.

Wallpaper has outgrown its conventional use of strictly being used on walls. We are now seeing designers cover doors, cabinets, ceilings—you name it! Designs are shifting away from clean, white looks and stepping into one-of-a-kind personality pieces that make a house yours or a rental property tell a story. Consider thinking outside of the box with color, texture, and pattern, and find ways wallpaper can elevate your home.

Color

Color dictates the focus of a room. In the new trend of adding wallpaper to a ceiling, viewers look up. It elongates the room. In a bedroom, you can wallpaper the back wall of the bed and it can act as a headboard and show direction for the room.

Wallpaper is a great way to find synergy between multiple colors in a space. In the powder room renovation below, the wallpaper is the cohesion between two other textures and colors: the white tile floor and the brown wooden cabinet. Now, the walls demand attention.

Texture

Do you lean more towards a minimalist design? Adding textured wallpaper elevates and adds interest to an otherwise duller color palette. In the room I renovated below, the textured beige wallpaper looks clean without being boring.

Textured wallpaper also adds dimension, which is great in smaller spaces. I often lean towards wallcoverings in powder rooms to add intrigue to more enclosed walls. Below, I added a wicker texture and a shiny gold texture to different powder room projects.

Pattern

While color can dictate attention and texture adds dimension, pattern dictates the overall mood of the space. A scenic mural is very luxurious and transformative, bringing the outdoors within. On the contrary, a whimsical, striped wallpaper is playful and young.

The scale of the wallpaper plays a factor in the mood of the space. A pattern that repeats many times is more energetic, whereas a loser pattern is more relaxing. Below, I have used both scales of patterns, the more frequent pattern in a hallway for energy and the marble pattern above the bed for calmness.

Whether it be a small or large space, consider how wallpaper can change the color, texture, and pattern of your space and transform the overall feel!
